ROCK WALLS & BOULDERS.

Decorative rock walls, boulder placement, dry-stack stone, and engineered retaining walls — built to handle Wasatch slope, soil, and freeze-thaw.

Why this matters

ROCK WALLS DO
TWO JOBS AT ONCE.

A rock wall holds back grade so you can build flat usable space, and it looks good doing it. We design walls that are structurally engineered for the load, properly drained behind, and aesthetically integrated with the rest of the landscape.

Walls under 4 feet typically don't require permits in most Utah jurisdictions. Taller walls need structural engineering — which we coordinate. Either way, we don't cut corners on backfill drainage. A wall that fails is almost always a wall that wasn't drained properly.

The Build

ENGINEERED FROM FOOTING UP.

01

Engineering

Walls over 4 feet get structural engineering. Geogrid layout designed for the load.

02

Excavation & Footing

Excavated to spec depth. Compacted crushed-stone leveling base.

03

Wall Build

Stones, blocks, or boulders set course by course. Geogrid laid into wall on engineered systems.

04

Backfill & Drainage

Drain pipe behind base, free-draining gravel backfill, geotextile separation.

FAQ

ROCK WALLS & BOULDERS QUESTIONS.

How tall can a rock wall be without permits?

Most Utah jurisdictions: 4 feet from grade to top. Taller requires structural engineering and a permit. We handle both.

How long do rock walls last?

30+ years with proper drainage. Most failures come from inadequate backfill drainage.

Boulder walls vs engineered block?

Boulders look more natural, work great for slope landscaping. Engineered block is better for tall structural retaining. Both have their place.

Can a rock wall double as a seat wall?

Yes — short walls (18-24") are often integrated as seating along patios or fire pits.

Tiered vs single tall wall?

Tiered (multiple shorter walls with planted terraces) is often more durable and more attractive than one tall wall when space permits.

Drainage behind the wall?

Critical. We always install perforated drain pipe behind the base course in free-draining gravel. Without this, walls fail in 5-10 years.
